Every four years Guatemala lives the heavy atmosphere of presidential elections despite the fact that many presidents have tried to extend their term, with the argument that they need more time to finish their projects, that did not even reached the half of what was projected, because the money went into their pockets instead.
Fortunately for the country, this has not been achieved and months after the handling of power to the new president, it has been discovered that the previous president did not perform the projects he offered, and the new government discovered thefts and misappropriations that allows the new president to complain that he received an economically broken country.
I have heard this since my childhood and every four years the same story is repeated. Every president cries about the misery of the country and he requests foreign money from the US and other countries to help him get out of poverty, even if this means acquiring more international debts for the country.
The interesting thing is that although the country is plunged into misery, the rulers leave the power enriched with fat bank accounts overseas and properties that never in their lives could think of buying through honest work.
The sumptuous life of the Guatemalan presidents contrasts with the poverty of the country., a country that has scandalous indexes of corruption, a collapsed health system where national hospitals do not have supplies for patients, an educational system that does not comply with the Constitutional right that provides children with good and free education, there is no safety on the streets, roads are in terrible state, there are no post office services, the prices of the basic basket are too high for the low wages of the majority of Guatemalans, and as the cherry on top of the cake, the rate of malnutrition and poverty are alarming.
This is what American and international Presidents should verify before sending money to the pockets of corrupt presidents, instead support and verify the development of projects that will benefit Guatemalans and the country.
